Union Cabinet decides to put in place National Population Register (NPR).

At time when nationwide protests are taking place against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and the NRC (National Register of Citizens), the Union Cabinet took decision today to create the National Population Register (NPR) and also allotted Rs.8,500 crore for it. The National Population Register is seen as the first step towards nationwide exercise to implement the NRC (National Register of Citizens). This decision has been taken by the Cabinet, despite recent announcement by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, that there will not be nationwide NRC. This clearly shows that the NRC will be implemented throughout the nation.
