The Central government’s debt stood at a whopping Rs 155 lakh crore at the end of March 2023. Under this situation, the IMF has predicted that India's general debt may exceed 100% of its GDP, by the financial year 2028. The IMF expects India’s public debt to rise to 82.3 per cent of the GDP in 2024-25. However, the Union Finance Ministry has said that the prediction of the IMF is unlikely to happen. In the meanwhile, the Congress Party has alleged that Indian government’ debt was only Rs.55 lakh crore in 2014, while it has crossed Rs.155 lakh crore presently
