India is celebrating its 73^rd Republic Day tomorrow. Even though India gained independence from the British in 1947, it was only on January 26, 1950, that the Indian Constitution came into effect, and India became a Republic. Dr. BR Ambedkar headed the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. It is a matter of pride that, even after completion of 72 years, India continues to be a secular democratic republic. The founding fathers of independent India, especially Mahatma Gandhi, desired that the country should be a secular nation. However, it is a matter of serious concern that, the present day rulers seek to devide the people of India on communal lines. Further, democracy is also becoming a casualty, in the hands of the rulers. Sedition law and many other draconian laws are being used to suppress the people.
